Barrels – nickel-based alloys
Greater barrel protection thanks to 10× larger tungsten carbides
Reiloy nickel-based hard alloys with tungsten carbides form the inlay of bimetallic barrels for highly abrasive and corrosive applications. The carbides are up to 10× larger than in comparable alloys and therefore resist abrasive wear considerably better at the same hardness.
Benefits
- Carbides up to 10× larger than in comparable alloys
- Better protection against abrasive particles at the same hardness
- Highly corrosion-resistant nickel matrix with tungsten carbides
- Suitable for applications with high corrosivity and/or coarse abrasive wear
- R239 as a more cost-effective alternative, also extending screw life
- Extruder barrels
- Injection moulding machine barrels
- Processing of highly filled and abrasive plastics
- Processing of corrosive materials

Description
The carbides themselves are not attacked by abrasive substances – they stand in their way, and large carbides do so more effectively than small ones. In Reiloy nickel-based alloys, the carbides are ten times larger than in conventional nickel alloys, cover a larger proportion of the surface and significantly reduce the area exposed to abrasive attack. The result is more effective wear protection and longer barrel life.
Alloy R241 (Premium) provides universal protection against many abrasive materials, and alloy R115 (Select) maximum corrosion protection. For applications where wear is too aggressive for an iron-based alloy but does not require the Premium level, the more cost-effective nickel alloy R239 with tungsten carbides is available, which also extends screw life.
Resistance to adhesive wear was verified by a pin-roller test at ISAF TU Clausthal (M390 counterpart with a hardness of 59 HRC, load 150 N, peripheral speed 1.5 m/s, 250 °C, 4 hours).
