Barrels – iron-based alloys
Barrel protection with the highest density of ceramic phases
Reiloy iron-based hard alloys (R121 and R131) form the inlay of bimetallic barrels for extrusion and injection moulding. Thanks to an exceptionally dense layer of ceramic phases beneath the surface, they provide better protection against abrasive wear than conventional iron-based alloys at the same hardness.
Benefits
- Microhardness of ceramic phases 1,600 HV0.1
- Deep protective layer of dense ceramic phases beneath the honed surface
- Ductile matrix preventing surface spalling
- Reiloy's own centrifugal casting process
- R121 shows better corrosion resistance than other alloys in a 24 h salt spray test
- Abrasive wear verified by a pin-on-paper test in the Reiloy laboratory (4× 90 s, 220-grit abrasive paper, 70 N load)
- Extruder barrels
- Injection moulding machine barrels
- Processing of filled plastics and recyclates

Description
In Reiloy iron-based alloys, ceramic phases (borides, carbides) form a deep protective layer just beneath the honed surface – a layer that conventional alloys lack. The entire production process, including in-house centrifugal casting and the machines adapted to it, is designed to create this layer.
The microhardness of the ceramic phases reaches 1,600 HV0.1; the surrounding matrix has exactly the right elasticity to prevent the surface from spalling. The result is long-term protection against abrasive particles at the same hardness.
Alloy R121 (Smart) is intended for standard applications, R131 (Advanced) for very high demands on wear and corrosion protection. A matching Reiloy screw is also available for every barrel.
